The
sequel of Abbas-Mustan’s 2008 thriller, ‘Race 2’, released on January 25, 2013,
looks racing at the box-office also as the movie has already collected Rs 51.35
crore within three days of its release. Even though the film received mixed
reviews from critics, it has not reduced the box office collections.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#Race2 collected approx Rs
51.35 cr nett in its opening weekend. Breakup: – Fri 15.12 cr, Sat 20.72 cr,
Sun 15.51 cr.”
Race 2 was released on Eid day, a national holiday. The movie,
taking the advantage of the holiday, made a good start collecting 15.12 crore
on its opening day. This decent first day collection is the 8th highest of all
time.
The movie also took advantage of the Republic day holiday, on
its second day of release and continued to rake in good business. After seeing
the second day collections, Adarsh tweeted yesterday, “INDIA: #Race2 has a
FANTABULOUS Saturday. Fri Rs 15.12 cr, Sat Rs 20.72 cr. Total: Rs 35.84 cr
nett.”
And after three days, which is its first weekend of release, the
sequel has crossed 50 crore mark and the film is expected to cross 100 crores.
However, whether or not that would be probable in the first week itself is
unclear. But, the next two days, Monday and Tuesday collections will give us
good idea about the first week prediction.
All across India, the film is received well, with each centre
receiving very good collections. The collection was huge in metros as well as
in smaller centres, on all three days. The film has taken a superb start at
overseas centres too, collecting Rs 7.50 crore. The film has to perform well on
all weekdays in order to become a clear winner.
‘Race 2’ stars Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham,
Jaqueline Fernandez, Anil Kapoor and Ameesha Patel in important roles. Bipasha
Basu plays cameo role in the movie. She reappears as Sonia from the prequel
“Race”.
